Online Roulette Sites

If you’re in the mood to play roulette online, you’ve come to the right place. I love a good game of roulette and have spun the wheel at dozens of casino sites in my day. It’s a relatively simple game from the player’s point of view, but there’s actually quite a bit that goes into finding the best roulette casino sites. Finding the best places to play the game requires a big picture approach that extends beyond simply whether or not the game is offered.

The following casino sites have always provided me with the best experience. Not only do they host roulette games at a wide range of stakes, but they also operate in a manner consistent with the standards we expect from high quality casino sites. What this means is they are safe sites, truly random and treat players like valued customers.

You can get started right now at any of the above casinos and I can guarantee you’ll have a great experience. If you’d like to know more about why I choose these sites in particular, read for an overview of my thought process when ranking casino sites with roulette.

Roulette Bonuses and Signup Promotions

Deposit bonuses are offered to all potential customers as an incentive to sign up and make a real money deposit. Every roulette casino that I’ve ever visited had some sort of cash bonus that was awarded upon making my first deposit. However, roulette has an odd relationship with deposit bonuses as I’ll explain next.

Does the bonus even work with roulette?

If you’re considering signing up somewhere and getting a deposit bonus, you should first check to see if he bonus even works with roulette in the first place. Most deposit bonuses are not compatible with roulette.

Here’s the problem: almost all deposit bonuses come with a requirement that you place a certain dollar amount of wagers before you the bonus is fully released for you to use and withdraw. Low advantage games such as roulette and blackjack are often excluded from meeting the wagering requirements.

It’s so hard to find roulette-compatible bonuses that I don’t even go out of my way anymore. If a bonus comes along and it’s offered by a casino that I trust, then I’ll take it. If not, I’m not going to search the whole internet for the perfect bonus.

Online Roulette Bonus Rollover Requirements

If you are able to find a bonus that works with roulette, make sure you read the rollover requirements carefully. Your online casino site may tell you the bonus is compatible with roulette, but read a little closer and you might see that roulette is subject to much higher rollover requirements.

I have encountered numerous “all game” bonuses with standard rollovers equal to about 20 times the deposit plus bonus amount. This is a pretty standard rollover and it always gets my hopes up. Then I read closer and I see that wagers in roulette only count 0.10 towards the rollover. What this means is that every dollar you wager at the roulette table only counts as $0.10 towards the rollover. What looks like a 20x rollover is actually a 200x rollover in practice.

These are the things to watch out for with roulette. This is why I really don’t even bother with bonuses too much. Also keep this in mind whenever you visit other websites that claim to list the best roulette bonuses. You might not always be getting the full story. Good roulette bonuses do come around from time to time but don’t hold your breath waiting for them.

Live Dealer Roulette Sites

Live dealer roulette sites are one of the most exciting innovations to come out of the online casino industry. The basic idea is simple: a live video feed lets players wager at a table with a real live dealer. With live dealer roulette, you can watch in real time as a human dealer handles your wagers, spins the wheel, and pays out your winnings.

The results are once again determined by the physics of an actual ball spinning around a wheel. If you have little faith in random number generators, a live dealer game provides a nice compromise.

Not all casino sites offer live dealer roulette, but many of the largest do. Live dealer roulette may not move as quickly as automated roulette, but it adds a nice bit of variety to the online gaming experience.

Play Roulette Online For Real Money

Assuming you’re planning on playing for real money, there are a few other things to look for in the search for the perfect roulette site. Safety and security should be a given. Any site you’re even thinking about playing at must have a perfect track record for fair treatment of players and honoring all withdrawals. There’s absolutely no reason whatsoever to entrust your money with any site that does not have a flawless reputation.

The websites that I play at for real money earned my trust over a period of years. I found those sites by doing my research online and then testing them with small deposits. Over time, I built a sort of rapport with these sites and now trust them completely. If you don’t know where to even begin in the search, I would like to once again recommend the casinos listed at the top of this page.

Here are a few other things to consider.

Does the roulette site offer the stakes you need?

Do a little advance planning and think about how much you think you’re likely to risk per spin. If you’re an average gambler like most of us, most sites will fit you just find. In my experience, the minimum wager is almost always $1.00 (or 1 pound/euro) per spin. It goes up from there with most sites maxing out at around $200 per spin.

I urge any high rollers reading this to double check the stakes offered before you sign up. If you like to wager more than $200 per spin, check each site’s maximum wager. Some casinos accept wagers as high as $1,000 or $5,000 per spin.

Quality of Online Roulette Software

The majority of your time at any gambling site will be spent interacting with the software, so it’s important they get this part right. High quality software is easy to use, easy to understand and capable of providing you with a fair game. There are three things in particular that I look at when reviewing the software.

No Download Options

No download roulette software allows you to interact with the game online in your web browser. If you can’t or don’t want to download anything, a no download software gives you the option to visit the casino website and play for real money right there in your browser. This option is a blessing for anyone with Mac or Linux-based operating systems.

Most casinos now have both a full download and instant play option for all customers. The full download is best if you have a PC as you tend to get see a greater variety of games with the full download package. Instant play casinos tend to stick with the most basic table games and a smaller collection of slots. Being the popular game that it is, roulette is almost always provided in the instant play version of any casino.

Is it mobile friendly?

Roulette works well on mobile devices because it doesn’t require a terribly complicated graphics setup. The majority of roulette casinos have updated their instant play software to work with today’s iPhones, iPads and other tablets/smartphones.

If you live in the UK or some other regulated market, your casino site may even have an app in your phone’s app store. All you have to do is visit the app store and search for the casino’s name. This option is not available in some highly-regulated markets.

Graphics and Usability

Graphics and usability ultimate determine what it’s like to actually play. The better the graphics and the easier it is to place wagers, the happier I am. This one is kind of subjective, but basically I want my roulette software to look polished and professional. I want to place wagers with ease and then watch as the roulette ball spins around in circles and comes to rest. The idea here is to get the online experience as close to the real life experience as possible.

Online Roulette Deposit and Withdrawal Methods

Banking methods are important for obvious reasons. You’re going to need a reliable method to fund your account in the beginning and then withdraw your winnings at the end. Casinos usually do a pretty good job on this front because they can’t make any money if people can’t deposit.

The thing to look for is a deposit method that works for you. Most roulette websites accept deposits by way of credit card, debit card, PayPal, Skrill, Neteller and Click2Pay.

Are Roulette Casino Sites Reputable?

A brand that isn’t reputable isn’t worth the time of day. You have hundreds of casinos at your fingertips thanks to the internet. There’s no reason to play at a site that cannot prove it is reputable. The only problem is that a low quality casino would never admit to not being reputable. You’ll have to do your own research to get an unbiased opinion.

Note: I only recommend reputable operators here at OnlineCasinoSites.com. If you’re unsure of where to play, you can always opt to go with one of my top picks. You’ll be in good hands.

There are a couple things you can look into to get a handle of how reputable a roulette website is.

Is the operator licensed and regulated?

Roulette sites that are licensed by reputable authorities are held to higher standards of conduct. More importantly, they are investigated and tested to ensure the games are fair, the odds are true and their financial houses are in order. Casinos caught engaging in any funny business are punished.

However, it should be noted that some licensing authorities are more effective than others. The UK’s Gambling Commission is the gold standard for keeping everyone in line. Likewise, a Costa Rican license doesn’t actually mean much.

Are Roulette sites fair and truly random?

Online casino sites can actually prove they are fair and their games truly random by submitting to audits conducted by third party testing agencies. Testing agencies can play the games, analyze the results and investigate the internal mechanisms used to produce random results. Sites that can pass the rigorous testing process are indeed fair and random.

Quality of Customer Support

Customer support is a key indicator of how reputable an operator is. A lack of decent customer support indicates serious issues. Here are the questions I ask when looking at customer support:

  • How many contact methods do they offer?
  • How fast does customer support respond to inquiries?
  • Do they fully answer all questions?
  • Are they courteous and friendly or rude and dismissive?

How to Play Roulette

Roulette is an all-time classic with a simple ruleset that gives players the very real chance to rack up a lot of winnings in a short amount of time. The house advantage isn’t too bad, winning wagers pay as much as 35 to 1 and it’s easy to understand. Online roulette casinos bring this classic game to your living room with the same rules and payouts that you’d expect to find in the real world.

If you’re unfamiliar with roulette, this is the game in which the croupier gives the big numbered wheel a spin and then drops a ball into the wheel. As the wheel slows down to a stop, the ball settles into one of the 37 numbered slots. These slots are labeled with the numbers 1 through 36 plus an additional slot reserved for zero. American roulette wheels have an additional slot reserved for double zero.

The slots alternate in color between red and black and even and odd. Your objective as the player is to predict where the ball will land. You can place a wager on a single number, a group of numbers or in a red or black slot. Payouts vary on the difficulty of the prediction. A wager on a single number pays 35 to 1 while a wager on even or odd pays even money.

The house advantage in roulette derives from the existence of the green zero slot. The payouts for winning bets are calculated based on the likelihood of the ball landing in the correct slot but they do not account for the green slot. For example, a bet on even or odd pays out at 1:1 even though there is a chance that the ball will land on neither (a green slot instead). A bet on a single number pays out at 35 to 1 even though there are 37 possible landing spots.

Roulette Bets and Wagers

You place your bets in roulette by placing your chips on the corresponding spot on the layout next to the wheel. The layout is arranged so that you can place your chips on a single number or groups of numbers. If you want to place a bet on several different numbers, you can either place your chips on each of those numbers or you can place them on the line between two (or more) connecting numbers. There are also special spots on the layout reserved for placing even/odd, red/black and high/low bets.

  • Even or Odd: In this bet you predict that the ball will land in either an even or odd numbered slot. If your prediction is correct, you are paid even money.
  • Red or Black: This is a wager in which you predict that the ball will land in either a red or black slot. The payout for a winning red/black bet is even money.
  • High or Low: You choose the numbers 1-18 or 19-36. If the ball lands in the group you selected, you are paid even money.
  • Dozen Bet: This is a bet on one of three groups of numbers (1-12, 13-24 or 25-36). You are paid 2 to 1 if the ball lands in the group you chose.
  • Column Bet: This is also a bet on any group of 12 numbers but different slots make up each group of 12. Once again, the payout is 2 to 1 for winning bets.
  • Single Number or “Straight Up” Bet: This is a bet on any single number on the wheel. If the ball lands in that slot, you are paid 35 to 1.
  • Split Number: This is a bet on any two numbers. This wager is placed by setting your chips on the dividing line between any two numbers on the layout. This bet pays 17 to 1.
  • Street Bet: This is a bet on any three numbers. Winning wagers are paid 11 to 1.
  • Corner Bet: This is a bet on any four numbers. If the ball lands on any of those numbers, you are paid 8 to 1.
  • Six Line: This is a bet on a group of six numbers. The payout for this one is 5 to 1.
  • Basket Bet: The basket bet is only available on American roulette tables. This one consists of the numbers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. This is the worst bet in all of roulette because all other wagers in American roulette have a house advantage of 5.26%. This one has an advantage of 7.89%. If you find yourself at an American roulette table, avoid the basket bet.

Finally our last piece of advice about playing roulette online, don’t bet your life savings on roulette like Ashley Revelle did. Even though it worked out for him, it was incredibly irresponsible (but gutsy!).

American vs. European Roulette

Real money roulette is offered in two versions online: European and American. Any time you have the choice between the two, choose European roulette. The only difference between the two games is the European version has only one green slot (0) while the American version has two green slots (0 and 00).

The additional green slot in American roulette doubles the house advantage. Whenever you place a wager on a number, group of numbers or color, your wager is lost when the ball lands in a green slot. American roulette has twice as many green slots and a house advantage double that of European roulette.

  • American roulette house advantage: 5.26%
  • European roulette house advantage: 2.7%
