One of the best National Hunt races of the year is quick approaching, with the 2016 King George VI Chase taking place this Monday. We will sadly miss out on the much-anticipated duel between Cue Card and Coneygree after the latter was withdrawn by his trainers who said something looked off with him after Saturday’s workout, but the pending showdown between Cue Card and Thistlecrack should serve almost just as well.

The 2016 edition of the King George VI Chase is down to just seven runners and may soon be down even further with Road to Riches still not a sure shot to start. He’s recovering from an operation related to kissing spines and his trainers stated yesterday that they’re about 50/50 on whether or not they’ll start Road to Riches.

However many runners we end up with, the 2016 King George VI Chase will start with Cue Card the betting favorite. The oddsmakers have started him odds in the range of 11/8 with Thistlecrack behind him at 6/4. Between these two hard chargers, there is not a whole lot of faith in the rest of the field. The odds jump to 11/1 for Josses Hill as the third-favorite and only lengthen from there for the other runners.

A strong case could be made for backing both Cue Card and Thistlecrack. As for Cue Card, he returns as this year’s defending champion having won in 2015. Over the course of his 33-rate career, he has 15 wins with 8 of those being Grade I races. Cue Card jumped to prominence back in 20110 when he started as a 40/1 underdog in the Champion Bumper at that year’s Cheltenham Festival. He went on to win that race by eight lengths to start his legendary career.

Cue Card is not getting any younger these days, but his age certainly didn’t slow him down last month as he raced home to first place in the Betfair Chase. Another win on Boxing Day will give Cue Card two legs on the Steeplechasing Triple Crown and put him on pace to win the £1 million bonus if he wins all three legs.

Meanwhile, Cue Card stablemate Thistlecrack will be looking to take a big step up in competition and contest the 2016 King George VI Chase. Thistlecrack has made quite a name for himself on the back of a successful novice hurdles career. But with just three starts over fences, it is tough to justify backing Thistlecrack at odds that are nearly equal to those of the more experienced Cue Card.

In addition to Cue Card and Thistlecrack, Josses Hill, Tea for Two, Silviniaco Conti, Road to Riches and Roi Des Francs are all slated to make the run at Kempton on Monday. The outsiders are priced from around 11/1 to 50/1 depending on where you bet.
