Summary

TVG.com is one of the oldest betting websites in the United States with a history that dates back to 1993. The company boasts a track record of fair betting and fast payouts that spans across more than two decades. With live racing video, race replays and free handicapping tools, TVG provides a complete gambling product for anyone with an interest in horses.

Today, TVG is licensed to do business in the United States and operates openly in more than 30 states. A long list of betting options combined with the afore-mentioned reputation places TVG firmly in the short-list of sites that I recommend to people looking for a safe place to bet on horses online.

TVG is now owned by the Betfair group, which is a publicly traded company on the London Stock Exchange. The fact that both companies are licensed in their host nations should help assuage any safety concerns that you may have. This is not an operation that will be closing shop in the middle of the night any time soon.

Betting Review

Personal experience shaped my TVG review and my conclusion that it does many things well, but it is not a perfect betting site. Some of the things TVG does well is cover every major racetrack in the United States, provide worthwhile promotions, pay out winning wagers at full track odds and offer every type of horse bet that you would find in person at the actual track.

What’s missing from TVG is much coverage of international tracks. The focus here is clearly on North American tracks. They do accept wagers on some of the bigger UK, European and Australian tracks, but the full list of tracks maxes out at about 150. Compare this to TwinSpires which covers 300+ tracks and you can see TVG could use some major improvement in that regard.

Apart from the limited international offering, TVG does an admirable job at offering new wager and introducing fresh promotions. If you want to place a bet, all you have to do is log in and choose the track of your choice or select from a menu of today’s scheduled races. TVG takes wagers as small as $0.10 and as high as $9,999 as long as the host track is willing to book bets that large (all wagers taken online are comingled with wagers taken at the physical track location).

Live video is offered for free up to an extent. You begin each month with 10 hours’ worth of racing video. After that, each $25 worth of wagers placed earns an additional hour of free live racing videos that month. You can also purchase 10 more hours of video for a flat $3 fee if you use up your free 10 hours before the end of the month.

One of the major strong points of the TVG experience is a litany of handicapping tools and handicapping advice articles. You can view past performances, racing forms and expert picks ahead of each race at no cost to you. In the past while betting at other racing sites, I have sometimes found myself logging in to TVG just to take advantage of their handicapping tips.

Deposit Bonus

A $150 deposit bonus is offered to all new customers who sign up for an account and make a real money deposit. The amount of the bonus is fixed at $150 regardless of how much you deposit, but release of the bonus is contingent upon you placing at least $200 worth of wagering during your first 15 days as an account holder.

When compared to other horse racing sites, this bonus is about middle-of-the-road in terms of overall size. I like the fact that it doesn’t require you to deposit a certain amount of money, but I’m not too impressed by the short time frame you have to complete the wagering requirements. If you want to get your hands on the money, you need to get busy betting as soon as you sign up.

Bonus code: None necessary

Customer appreciation at TVG extends beyond the welcome bonus with a rewards program that issues frequent player points for every real money bet placed. The more you wager, the more points you earn. You can then redeem points for cash bonuses added to your account and SkyMall gift certificates.

Deposit Methods

One of the advantages of betting at licensed websites is the fact that depositing money and getting paid is so much easier than it is for unlicensed, offshore betting sites. TVG offers numerous deposit methods and a variety of fast payout options.

  • Electronic Bank Transfer: Deposit up to $1100 with no fees
  • Credit and Debit Cards: Deposit up to $5,000 per 30 days (3.5% fee)
  • Checks and Money Orders: Deposit any amount with no fee
  • Bill Pay: Use your bank’s bill pay feature to deposit any amount with no fee
  • Wire Transfer: Deposit any amount for a flat $15 fee (fee is waived if you deposit at least $1,000)
