The final match of the 2015-16 UEFA Champions League season is fast approaching. This year’s UEFA Champions League final will be hosted on 28 May, 2016 at Stadio San Siro in Milan.
Real Madrid got to this point after knocking out Wolfsburg 3-2 in the quarter finals and Manchester City 1-0 in the semi finals. Atletico is here after knocking out Barcelona 3-2 in the quarter finals and then squeezing past Bayern 2-2 in the semi finals on the back of an away goals advantage.
Best Bookmakers for the Champions League Final:
This is a final of repeats as it marks the second time since 2014 that Real Madrid and Madrid Atletico have faced one another in the final. This will also be the third all-Spanish final and the sixth time in competition history that two clubs from the same association have faced one another in the final.
The last time Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid faced one another resulted in a devastating 4-1 loss for Atletico. Cristiano Ronaldo contributed one goal in that match and he looks primed to do more of the same this time around. So far, Ronaldo leads in goal scoring far with 16 goals to his name. To put that in perspective, the second-best goalscorer (Robert Lewandowski of Bayern) has 9.
As for Real Madrid, this will be their 27th UEFA final and an attempt at their 11th Champions League title. You could argue that their road to the final has been easier than what Atletico had to face between Barca and Bayern, but Real Madrid is a vicious and experienced side no matter what.
Experience and history certainly side with Real Madrid. Atletico will be fighting for their first Champions League final win, although they do at least have some history playing on the big stage. They finished as runners-up in 2014 to Real Madrid and made it to the final way back in 1974.
There’s no question that we’re in store for an excellent final between two great teams, but what isn’t as clear is who will score enough goals to get the job done and exit with the trophy. The bookmakers clearly favour Real Madrid, but both teams have an attack that is more than capable of beating anyone in the world.
As for Real Madrid, their vaunted BBC trio consisting of Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo is a machine. Together, the trio has 98 goals for the season and 20 during the tournament phase. Bale has been absent in the goal scoring department of late, but all three appear healthy and ready to start ahead of the final.
Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann and Fernando Torres combine for a fast-attacking duo that have together put up eight goals over the tournament phase. They fall far short of Real’s BBC in terms of total goals scored, but they remain a threat nonetheless.
