Two Different Things Called Mobile Payment

This category holds two mechanisms that have little in common. The first is a card wrapper: Apple Pay and Google Pay pass an existing card through a device, and Apple describes the mechanism precisely — a "device-specific number instead of your actual card number", so the card number stays hidden from the merchant. The money and the protections are the card's. The second is mobile money, where the phone account IS the account: M-Pesa in Kenya and its equivalents elsewhere hold a balance and move it between numbers, with no card and often no bank behind it.

Why the Difference Decides What Protections Apply

A card wrapper inherits the card's rules, which in Great Britain includes the ban on gambling with a credit card — a debit card in a wallet is still a debit card, and a credit card in a wallet is still barred. It also inherits the card's dispute process. Mobile money inherits neither: the balance is not a bank deposit and not a card line, so the recourse if something goes wrong is whatever the mobile-money operator and the betting operator each offer, and the two are rarely the same. For a reader choosing between them, that is the whole question.

What to Check Before Using One

Whether the operator accepts the specific wallet or scheme rather than "mobile payments" in general, because support is patchy, and the tiles on this page are the record of what has been found. Whether withdrawals can come back the same way — card wrappers often cannot receive one, so the money returns to the underlying card or to a bank account instead. And, for mobile money, which licensed entity holds the balance, since that is the one a complaint would go to.
