Prediction markets—

Betting is fully legal and regulated in Tanzania, overseen by the Gaming Board of Tanzania (GBT) under the Gaming Act (Cap. 41, 2003) and the Internet Gaming Regulations 2022. Online and retail sports betting are licensed and widely operated (Betway, SportPesa, M-BET, etc.), with a minimum betting age of 18. The 2026/27 budget introduces a new 5% excise duty on all betting stakes effective 1 July 2026.

The Gaming Act, Cap. 41 (effective 1 July 2003) is the primary legislation, establishing the Gaming Board of Tanzania (GBT) as the sole licensing and regulatory authority for casinos, sports betting (retail and online), lotteries, slots and virtual games. Online betting is fully regulated under the Gaming (Internet Gaming) Regulations 2022 (GN No. 478T) and requires a separate licence, with KYC/age-verification obligations and annual renewal.

The minimum gambling age is 18, with violation a criminal offence. Mobile-money is central to the market (M-Pesa, Tigo Pesa, Airtel Money), fueling rapid growth in online and SMS betting. On tax, the 2025/26 budget proposed ending VAT exemptions on gaming supplies, and the 2026/27 budget (effective 1 July 2026) introduces a new 5% excise duty on the value of all bets (with 10% of that revenue allocated to the GBT); sports betting has historically been taxed at 25% of GGR.

Horse-race betting is named within the Gaming Act’s scope (regulated) but has no significant standalone domestic market. Prediction markets are not addressed in Tanzanian law (left null).

No operator on this site has been confirmed on the Tanzania regulator's register for online sports betting.

Support in Tanzania

Tanzania has no dedicated problem-gambling helpline run by an independent body. The most actionable verified contact is the Gaming Board of Tanzania (GBT) toll-free line 0800 110 051 (also +255 22 2214500), used for customer support and gaming enquiries rather than clinical counselling. Self-exclusion is operator-level, not a national register: GBT requires licensed operators to provide self-exclusion tools, deposit/loss limits and RG information in English and Swahili, and you can ask to be added to an operator's self-exclusion list. The minimum gambling age is 18. For free confidential gambling-specific counselling, use Gambling Therapy (gamblingtherapy.org), available in Swahili.
